Tree Surgeons in Hassocks & Keymer

Hassocks sits at the foot of the South Downs with a mix of housing that ranges from the large Victorian properties behind high hedges in old Keymer to the post-war family homes closer to the station. The village grew around the railway in the 1840s, and many of the older gardens are now well established with mature trees that need regular attention.

Keymer, the older part of the parish, has a particularly leafy character. The conservation area around St Cosmas and St Damian Church contains large houses set behind mature hedgerows and flint walls, with specimen trees that are often protected. We’ve worked on TPO-protected oaks and beeches throughout this area and are familiar with the planning requirements.

Being so close to the South Downs, Hassocks gardens often have native species like oak, beech, and yew alongside planted garden trees. The chalk downland influence means certain species thrive here that you don’t see as often further north. We understand the local growing conditions and can advise on the best approach for your trees.

Tree Preservation Orders in Hassocks & Keymer

If a tree on your property has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you must apply for permission before carrying out any work. Applications are free and can be submitted online via the Mid Sussex e-form or through the national Planning Portal. The council has up to 8 weeks to make a decision. For dead or dangerous TPO trees, a Five Day Notice must be submitted before work can start. You can check whether a tree is protected using the council’s interactive TPO map, where green markers indicate confirmed TPOs and blue hatching shows conservation areas.

If your property is within a conservation area, you must give 6 weeks’ written notice to the council before cutting down, topping, or lopping any tree with a trunk diameter over 75 mm (measured at 1.5 m above ground). This notice is submitted using the same form as TPO applications. The council uses the 6-week period to decide whether to place a TPO on the tree. If you do not hear back within 6 weeks, the work may proceed. Mid Sussex has 36 designated conservation areas, including areas in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Cuckfield, Lindfield, Hurstpierpoint, and Keymer.

Trimming trees both front and back of house

Anthony was very professional. We have two large Portuguese Laurels and some very tall trees at the end of the back garden and a couple of large trees in the front, they were all shaped and trimmed beautifully leaving a lot of foliage which was completely cleared away. We are very happy and will definitely recommend and use Anthony again.

He was incredibly respectful and left the area in the front of the house clean and tidy once he had finished. I’ll definitely call on him again when I need any garden or tree work carrying out.
