Tree Surgeons in Burgess Hill

AG Garden & Tree is based in Burgess Hill, so this is the town we know best. From the mature oaks in St John’s Park to the overgrown conifers on the post-war estates around Sheddingdean and Folders Lane, we’ve worked on trees in every part of the town. Whether you’re on one of the Victorian streets near Silverdale Road or in a newer development off Maple Drive, chances are we’ve already worked on your street.

Burgess Hill has grown significantly since the 1950s, which means many gardens now have trees that were planted 50 to 70 years ago and have outgrown their space. Conifers that were fashionable in the 1970s are a particular problem — they grow fast, block light, and often end up towering over houses. We remove dozens of these every year across the Oakwood, Worlds End, and Chanctonbury Road areas.

Parts of Burgess Hill are in conservation areas, including the streets around St John’s Park and Silverdale Road. If your property falls within one of these zones, you’ll need to give Mid Sussex District Council six weeks’ notice before doing any tree work. We handle the paperwork and advise on what’s needed before we start.

How We Help Burgess Hill Homeowners

With a population of over 32,000, Burgess Hill is the largest town in Mid Sussex. The mix of post-war housing estates, Victorian terraces, and newer developments means we see every kind of tree problem here. Overgrown Leyland cypress hedges on estate boundaries, storm-damaged oaks near the Green Circle, and TPO-protected trees in the conservation areas all need different approaches.

Planning guidance

Tree Preservation Orders in Burgess Hill

If a tree on your property has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you must apply for permission before carrying out any work. Applications are free and can be submitted online via the Mid Sussex e-form or through the national Planning Portal. The council has up to 8 weeks to make a decision. For dead or dangerous TPO trees, a Five Day Notice must be submitted before work can start. You can check whether a tree is protected using the council’s interactive TPO map, where green markers indicate confirmed TPOs and blue hatching shows conservation areas.

If your property is within a conservation area, you must give 6 weeks’ written notice to the council before cutting down, topping, or lopping any tree with a trunk diameter over 75 mm (measured at 1.5 m above ground). This notice is submitted using the same form as TPO applications. The council uses the 6-week period to decide whether to place a TPO on the tree. If you do not hear back within 6 weeks, the work may proceed. Mid Sussex has 36 designated conservation areas, including areas in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Cuckfield, Lindfield, Hurstpierpoint, and Keymer.

Bamboo removal

Job was to dig out and remove 2 clump forming bamboos from our back garden. This was carried out proficiently and garden was left extremely tidy. Advice was given on what to do if bamboo comes back, which was much appreciated. Pleasure to deal with and will certainly use again in the future for any tree works.

You can check the Mid Sussex DC interactive TPO map to see if your tree is protected. If it is, we’ll handle the application for you.
