Tree Surgeons in Hurstpierpoint

Hurstpierpoint is a village built on a sandstone ridge at the foot of the South Downs, with a character shaped by centuries of history. The High Street is lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings, and the surrounding gardens are full of mature trees — oaks, beeches, and sweet chestnuts that have been growing for generations. The village’s elevated position means trees here are exposed to South Downs winds, and storm damage is not uncommon.

With three designated conservation areas covering much of the village centre, Langton Lane, and Hurst Wickham, a significant number of trees in Hurstpierpoint are subject to planning restrictions. Before removing or significantly pruning any tree within these zones, you need to give Mid Sussex DC six weeks’ notice. We deal with these applications regularly and can guide you through the process.

The parish extends beyond the village into open countryside towards Sayers Common and Danny Park, where we also work on rural properties with larger grounds. The Grade I listed Danny House estate, with its 400 acres of historic parkland, is a reminder of the scale of tree management needed in this area. For domestic gardens, the most common jobs are crown reductions to let light into south-facing rooms and hedge maintenance on the boundary hedgerows that give Hurstpierpoint its enclosed, leafy feel.

How We Help Hurstpierpoint Homeowners

Hurstpierpoint’s period properties and established gardens mean crown reductions and careful pruning are the most requested services here. The village’s conservation areas also make TPO checks and planning advice particularly important. We regularly trim the beech, yew, and laurel hedges that front many properties on the High Street and surrounding lanes.

Tree Preservation Orders in Hurstpierpoint

If a tree on your property has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you must apply for permission before carrying out any work. Applications are free and can be submitted online via the Mid Sussex e-form or through the national Planning Portal. The council has up to 8 weeks to make a decision. For dead or dangerous TPO trees, a Five Day Notice must be submitted before work can start. You can check whether a tree is protected using the council’s interactive TPO map, where green markers indicate confirmed TPOs and blue hatching shows conservation areas.

If your property is within a conservation area, you must give 6 weeks’ written notice to the council before cutting down, topping, or lopping any tree with a trunk diameter over 75 mm (measured at 1.5 m above ground). This notice is submitted using the same form as TPO applications. The council uses the 6-week period to decide whether to place a TPO on the tree. If you do not hear back within 6 weeks, the work may proceed. Mid Sussex has 36 designated conservation areas, including areas in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Cuckfield, Lindfield, Hurstpierpoint, and Keymer.

Trimming trees both front and back of house

Anthony was very professional. We have two large Portuguese Laurels and some very tall trees at the end of the back garden and a couple of large trees in the front, they were all shaped and trimmed beautifully leaving a lot of foliage which was completely cleared away. We are very happy and will definitely recommend and use Anthony again.
