Tree Surgeon in Ditchling
Ditchling sits within the South Downs National Park, which means tree work here has additional planning considerations. We know the process and can guide you through it.
Tree Surgeons in Ditchling
Ditchling is a village of around 2,200 people at the foot of the South Downs, known for its arts heritage and its position entirely within the South Downs National Park. The village has over 40 listed buildings, a designated conservation area, and a landscape dominated by the chalk escarpment rising to Ditchling Beacon at 248 metres. Trees here grow in a mix of chalk and clay soils, and the exposed position means they face stronger winds than in the more sheltered Weald towns to the north.
Because Ditchling is in the National Park, planning for tree work is handled differently from the other towns we cover. Lewes District Council processes applications on behalf of the South Downs National Park Authority, and the rules around conservation areas and TPOs are strictly enforced. We work within this framework regularly and can advise on what permissions you’ll need before we start.
The village’s character — flint and brick cottages, mature hedgerows, and specimen trees in private gardens — is protected by both conservation area status and National Park designation. This doesn’t mean you can’t manage your trees, but it does mean the work needs to be done properly. We follow BS 3998 standards on every job and can demonstrate to the planning authority that any proposed work is sympathetic and necessary.
How We Help Ditchling Homeowners
The South Downs influence means beech, yew, and ash are more common in Ditchling gardens than in the Wealden clay towns to the north. Crown reductions to manage wind exposure, hedge trimming on the traditional hedgerows, and selective felling of dead or dangerous trees are the most common jobs we carry out here. Every job in the conservation area requires notice, and we handle this as standard.
Crown Reduction
Tree getting too big? We’ll reduce its height and spread without ruining its shape. You get more light, less worry about branches, and a tree that still looks natural.

Learn MoreTree Preservation Orders in Ditchling
Ditchling falls within the South Downs National Park, where Lewes District Council handles planning applications on behalf of the SDNPA. If a tree has a TPO, you must apply for consent before carrying out any work. Applications are free and submitted through the national Planning Portal. The authority has up to 8 weeks to decide. It is a criminal offence to carry out work on a TPO tree without consent, and fines can be significant. For dead or dangerous trees, a minimum of 5 working days’ notice with photographs and a sketch plan must be provided.
Ditchling has its own designated conservation area managed under the SDNPA framework. You must give 6 weeks’ notice before carrying out work on any unprotected tree in the conservation area with a trunk diameter over 75 mm at 1.5 m above ground. The notice period allows the authority to assess whether a TPO should be placed on the tree. Exemptions apply for trees below the diameter threshold and for dead or dangerous trees (which still require advance notice).

Removal of tree, shrubs and stump removal

Pruning the height and canopy width of a medium size tree.
Responded to the quote request promptly.Came and did exactly what we asked. Left the garden tidier than when they arrived. Friendly and helpful with advice for the future.
Trimming trees both front and back of house
Anthony was very professional. We have two large Portuguese Laurels and some very tall trees at the end of the back garden and a couple of large trees in the front, they were all shaped and trimmed beautifully leaving a lot of foliage which was completely cleared away. We are very happy and will definitely recommend and use Anthony again.
Hedge and Tree trimming
Anthony called me in advance to arrange the appointment and arrived at my home precisely when he advised. He was professional throughout, and showed genuine care for his work. He was incredibly respectful and left the area in the front of the house clean and tidy once he had finished. I’ll definitely call on him again when I need any garden or tree work carrying out.
Cutting back 2 large trees
Antony handled all the paperwork with the council (the trees have a preservation order). He arrived on time, completed the job quickly and efficiently and left everything neat and tidy. Couldn't ask for more. Would definitely recommend.

Common Questions in Ditchling
Who handles planning for tree work in Ditchling?
Ditchling is in the South Downs National Park, so planning is handled by the South Downs National Park Authority. In practice, Lewes District Council processes tree work applications on their behalf. We submit applications through the national Planning Portal, which routes them to the correct authority.
Is Ditchling in a conservation area?
Yes. Much of the village is covered by the Ditchling Conservation Area, managed by the SDNPA. This means you must give six weeks’ notice before carrying out work on any tree with a trunk diameter over 75 mm. We’ll check your property’s status and handle the notice for you.
Does being in the National Park make tree work more difficult?
Not necessarily. The process is the same — TPO applications and conservation area notices — but the planning authority tends to scrutinise applications more closely. Having an NPTC-qualified arborist carry out the work and submit the application makes a significant difference to the outcome. We can explain and justify the proposed work in terms the planning authority expects to see.
Can you remove trees near Ditchling Beacon?
Yes. We work throughout the Ditchling area, including properties near the Beacon and on the approach roads. Access can sometimes be more challenging on the narrower lanes, but we have vehicles and equipment suited to rural Sussex properties.
