Tree Surgeons in Cuckfield

Cuckfield is a historic village on the edge of the High Weald, with a steep High Street lined with 16th and 17th century houses and the tall spire of Holy Trinity Church rising above the rooftops. The village’s conservation area — one of the oldest in Mid Sussex, designated in 1969 — contains 72 listed buildings and is home to some remarkable trees, including mature oaks and beeches that are integral to the village’s character.

The grounds of Cuckfield Park, the Elizabethan estate built in 1574, contain specimen trees that have been growing for centuries. While Cuckfield Park itself is privately managed, many properties on the village fringes back onto woodland and share the same landscape of oak, hornbeam, and sweet chestnut that characterises the High Weald. Trees here grow in heavy Wealden clay, which affects how they root and how they respond to storms.

Working in Cuckfield almost always means working within or near the conservation area, which requires a thorough understanding of the planning process. We check every tree before quoting, advise whether notice is needed, and handle the paperwork. Our work in Cuckfield follows BS 3998 standards to ensure pruning cuts are correct and the tree’s long-term health is protected.

Our services

How We Help Cuckfield Homeowners

Because so much of Cuckfield falls within a conservation area, the most common work here is carefully planned crown reductions and selective pruning on mature trees. We also deal with hedge management along the lanes that surround the village, and stump grinding where old trees have been removed. The High Weald clay soil can make trees more susceptible to windthrow, so we often carry out preventative work to reduce sail area before winter.

Planning guidance

Tree Preservation Orders in Cuckfield

If a tree on your property has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you must apply for permission before carrying out any work. Applications are free and can be submitted online via the Mid Sussex e-form or through the national Planning Portal. The council has up to 8 weeks to make a decision. For dead or dangerous TPO trees, a Five Day Notice must be submitted before work can start. You can check whether a tree is protected using the council’s interactive TPO map, where green markers indicate confirmed TPOs and blue hatching shows conservation areas.

If your property is within a conservation area, you must give 6 weeks’ written notice to the council before cutting down, topping, or lopping any tree with a trunk diameter over 75 mm (measured at 1.5 m above ground). This notice is submitted using the same form as TPO applications. The council uses the 6-week period to decide whether to place a TPO on the tree. If you do not hear back within 6 weeks, the work may proceed. Mid Sussex has 36 designated conservation areas, including areas in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Cuckfield, Lindfield, Hurstpierpoint, and Keymer.

Tree and stump removal

Antony Geer of A C Garden & Trees and his team recently removed a very large Lawson Cypress tree plus a row of five Laylandii trees that were on a steep bank at the front of my house including tree stumps. I was most impressed by their efficiency and speed in completing the task and ensuring that the site was left clear of all debris. I have no hesitation in recommending A C Garden & Trees should you ever have the need to use their services. Rod Smith

FAQ

Common Questions in Cuckfield

Is all of Cuckfield in a conservation area?

Not all of it, but the historic core certainly is. The Cuckfield Conservation Area was designated in 1969 and extended in 1989. It covers the High Street, the church, and much of the surrounding historic village. Whitemans Green, to the north, falls partly outside the conservation area. We’ll check your property’s status before we start.

Do you work on trees in heavy clay soil?

Yes. Cuckfield sits on Wealden clay, which affects tree stability and root systems. We take soil conditions into account when assessing trees — clay soils can be prone to shrinkage in dry summers and waterlogging in winter, both of which affect tree health.

Can you advise on tree preservation orders in Cuckfield?

Absolutely. With 97 heritage listings and a long-established conservation area, many trees in Cuckfield are protected. We check the Mid Sussex TPO map for every job, advise on what permissions are needed, and submit applications on your behalf.
