AG Garden & Tree is based in Hassocks, right in the middle of West Sussex, and that central position is what lets us cover so much of the county. West Sussex asks more of a tree surgeon than most counties because its landscape changes so completely from south to north. Along the coast and the South Downs, thin chalk soils carry beech, yew, and ash, and trees grow exposed to salt-laden winds off the Channel. North of the scarp, the Low Weald’s heavy clay suits oak and hornbeam but waterlogs in winter, and the High Weald ridge around Horsham, Crawley, and East Grinstead is some of the most wooded country in England. Reading soil, species, and exposure correctly is the difference between tree work that lasts and work that stores up problems, and after nearly two decades here we know this county’s trees well.

Planning permission is the other thing that varies across West Sussex. Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas are managed by the district and borough councils — Mid Sussex, Horsham, Crawley, and Worthing among those we work under — while the South Downs National Park Authority is the planning authority for everything inside the park, which cuts right across the county. With well over a hundred conservation areas between them, it always pays to check before touching an established tree. We do that checking, and any TPO applications or six-week notices, as a standard part of every job.
