Tree Surgeons in West Sussex
AG Garden & Tree is based in Hassocks, right in the middle of West Sussex, and that central position is what lets us cover so much of the county. Our home patch is Mid Sussex — Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Hurstpierpoint, Cuckfield, and Lindfield, where we work daily — and from there we range across the county: north to Crawley and East Grinstead, west through Henfield and Steyning to Horsham, and south over the Downs to Worthing and the coast. Each of those towns has its own dedicated page with local detail, and if yours is not listed, call us — the answer is usually yes.
West Sussex asks more of a tree surgeon than most counties because its landscape changes so completely from south to north. Along the coast and the South Downs, thin chalk soils carry beech, yew, and ash, and trees grow exposed to salt-laden winds off the Channel. North of the scarp, the Low Weald’s heavy clay suits oak and hornbeam but waterlogs in winter, and the High Weald ridge around Horsham, Crawley, and East Grinstead is some of the most wooded country in England. Reading soil, species, and exposure correctly is the difference between tree work that lasts and work that stores up problems, and after nearly two decades here we know this county’s trees well.
Planning permission is the other thing that varies across West Sussex. Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas are managed by the district and borough councils — Mid Sussex, Horsham, Crawley, and Worthing among those we work under — while the South Downs National Park Authority is the planning authority for everything inside the park, which cuts right across the county. With well over a hundred conservation areas between them, it always pays to check before touching an established tree. We do that checking, and any TPO applications or six-week notices, as a standard part of every job.

Learn MoreTree Preservation Orders in West Sussex
Tree Preservation Orders in West Sussex are managed by the district and borough councils rather than the county council. Depending on where you live, your application goes to Mid Sussex District Council (Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, East Grinstead, and the villages around our Hassocks base), Horsham District Council, Crawley Borough Council, or Worthing Borough Council — and for properties inside the South Downs National Park, the National Park Authority is the planning authority. In every case, TPO applications are free, are submitted through the council’s own form or the national Planning Portal, and are normally decided within 8 weeks. We work under all of these authorities and handle the paperwork as part of every job.
The conservation area procedure is the same across the county: if your property is within a designated conservation area, you must give the local planning authority 6 weeks’ written notice before cutting down, topping, or lopping any tree with a trunk diameter over 75 mm measured at 1.5 m above ground. West Sussex has well over a hundred conservation areas between its districts — Mid Sussex alone has 36 and Horsham district around 39 — so it is always worth checking before work starts. We confirm the status of every tree we quote for and tell you which council, if any, needs to be notified.

Reviews from Checkatrade.com — 9.9/10 average from 209 reviews
Removal of a large Oak tree
Antony was polite and responsive from first contact. On site, the job was done efficiently, with skill (the large oak was roadside & there were telephone wires to navigate past) and his team cleaned the site extremely well afterwards. Everything was organised by Antony, including the traffic control on the main road. Very impressed and would definitely use again. Thank you.
Professional Efficient Garden and Tree experts
Anthony and team were excellent. Very good work carried out by a knowledgeable helpful team. Delighted with results.
Trim trees back
They arrived when they said they would and carried out the work that was requested. Very polite, efficient and tidy. I will use them again in the future.
Tree and stump removal
Antony Geer of A C Garden & Trees and his team recently removed a very large Lawson Cypress tree plus a row of five Laylandii trees that were on a steep bank at the front of my house including tree stumps. I was most impressed by their efficiency and speed in completing the task and ensuring that the site was left clear of all debris. I have no hesitation in recommending A C Garden & Trees should you ever have the need to use their services. Rod Smith
Bamboo removal
Job was to dig out and remove 2 clump forming bamboos from our back garden. This was carried out proficiently and garden was left extremely tidy. Advice was given on what to do if bamboo comes back, which was much appreciated. Pleasure to deal with and will certainly use again in the future for any tree works.
Antony shaped a bay tree and pruned back various trees
Antony is very knowledgable, he listened to what I wanted and advised on the best way of achieving that outcome. Thoroughly lovely person and I was very happy to have him in my garden. Very pleased with the results.

Common Questions in West Sussex
Which parts of West Sussex do you cover?
Our core area is Mid Sussex — Hassocks, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Hurstpierpoint, Cuckfield, and Lindfield — and we work regularly across the wider county in Horsham, Crawley, East Grinstead, Henfield, Steyning, and Worthing, as well as over the border in Brighton, Lewes, and Uckfield. For the far west of the county, give us a call and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit for the job.
Do you offer emergency tree work across West Sussex?
Yes. Storm-damaged, fallen, and dangerous trees are dealt with as a priority, and our central location in Hassocks means we can reach most of the county within about 35 minutes. Call us directly rather than using the quote form for anything urgent — if a tree is on a structure or blocking access, we will make it safe first and sort the paperwork afterwards.
Who do I apply to for TPO consent in West Sussex?
It depends where you live: TPOs are managed by the district and borough councils (Mid Sussex, Horsham, Crawley, and Worthing among those we cover), and by the South Downs National Park Authority for properties inside the park. Applications are free, but getting the details right matters. We identify the correct authority and submit the application or six-week conservation area notice for you on every job.
How much does tree surgery cost in West Sussex?
It depends on the size and condition of the tree, access to it, and whether planning consent is needed — which is why we quote every job individually and for free. Send us photos on WhatsApp for a quick estimate or book a free site visit. Our quotes are fixed, with no surprises, and include waste removal and any council paperwork.
