Tree Surgeon in East Grinstead
A historic High Weald town with a conservation area at its core and wooded countryside on every side. We provide expert tree surgery across East Grinstead and the surrounding villages.
Tree Surgeons in East Grinstead
East Grinstead sits at the northern tip of Mid Sussex, a town of around 26,000 people whose High Street contains one of the longest continuous runs of 14th-century timber-framed buildings in England, alongside the sandstone almshouses of Sackville College, built in 1609. The historic core is a designated conservation area with an appraisal adopted by Mid Sussex District Council, which means six weeks’ notice to the council is required before working on trees within it. Trees close to listed buildings need particularly careful, well-planned work, and that is exactly the kind of job we specialise in.
Few towns are as wrapped in woodland as East Grinstead. The High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty borders the town to the east and south, Ashdown Forest lies a few miles to the south-east, and the Worth Way and Forest Way country parks run out of the town along old railway lines. Gardens here are frequently carved out of that wooded landscape — oak, birch, and self-seeded ash on the sandstone ridge — and much of our work involves managing large native trees at the garden-woodland boundary.
East Grinstead falls under the same planning authority as our home patch: Mid Sussex District Council, whose interactive TPO map and six-week conservation area notice process we deal with almost daily in Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath. The town is about 16 miles from our Hassocks base, a 30-to-35-minute drive up through Lindfield, and we schedule East Grinstead work alongside our regular jobs in the north of the district.
How We Help East Grinstead Homeowners
The most common work we carry out in East Grinstead is crown reductions and crown lifts on mature oaks and beeches at woodland boundaries, ash removals where dieback has taken hold, and hedge management on established garden boundaries. The town’s conservation area and its many mature protected trees make planning checks a routine part of every job here.
Crown Reduction
Tree getting too big? We’ll reduce its height and spread without ruining its shape. You get more light, less worry about branches, and a tree that still looks natural.

Learn MoreTree Preservation Orders in East Grinstead
If a tree on your property has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you must apply for permission before carrying out any work. Applications are free and can be submitted online via the Mid Sussex e-form or through the national Planning Portal. The council has up to 8 weeks to make a decision. For dead or dangerous TPO trees, a Five Day Notice must be submitted before work can start. You can check whether a tree is protected using the council’s interactive TPO map, where green markers indicate confirmed TPOs and blue hatching shows conservation areas.
If your property is within a conservation area, you must give 6 weeks’ written notice to the council before cutting down, topping, or lopping any tree with a trunk diameter over 75 mm (measured at 1.5 m above ground). This notice is submitted using the same form as TPO applications. The council uses the 6-week period to decide whether to place a TPO on the tree. If you do not hear back within 6 weeks, the work may proceed. Mid Sussex has 36 designated conservation areas, including areas in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Cuckfield, Lindfield, Hurstpierpoint, and Keymer.

Removal of a large Oak tree
Antony was polite and responsive from first contact. On site, the job was done efficiently, with skill (the large oak was roadside & there were telephone wires to navigate past) and his team cleaned the site extremely well afterwards. Everything was organised by Antony, including the traffic control on the main road. Very impressed and would definitely use again. Thank you.
Professional Efficient Garden and Tree experts
Anthony and team were excellent. Very good work carried out by a knowledgeable helpful team. Delighted with results.
Trim trees back
They arrived when they said they would and carried out the work that was requested. Very polite, efficient and tidy. I will use them again in the future.
Tree and stump removal
Antony Geer of A C Garden & Trees and his team recently removed a very large Lawson Cypress tree plus a row of five Laylandii trees that were on a steep bank at the front of my house including tree stumps. I was most impressed by their efficiency and speed in completing the task and ensuring that the site was left clear of all debris. I have no hesitation in recommending A C Garden & Trees should you ever have the need to use their services. Rod Smith
Bamboo removal
Job was to dig out and remove 2 clump forming bamboos from our back garden. This was carried out proficiently and garden was left extremely tidy. Advice was given on what to do if bamboo comes back, which was much appreciated. Pleasure to deal with and will certainly use again in the future for any tree works.
Antony shaped a bay tree and pruned back various trees
Antony is very knowledgable, he listened to what I wanted and advised on the best way of achieving that outcome. Thoroughly lovely person and I was very happy to have him in my garden. Very pleased with the results.

Common Questions in East Grinstead
Is East Grinstead in a conservation area?
The historic town centre is. The East Grinstead Conservation Area covers the High Street and its surroundings, and Mid Sussex District Council has adopted a Conservation Area Appraisal for it. Within the boundary, you must give the council six weeks’ notice before carrying out work on any tree with a trunk diameter over 75 mm. We check your property’s status and handle the notice as part of the job.
Do you deal with ash dieback in East Grinstead?
Yes. The wooded High Weald landscape around East Grinstead has plenty of ash, and dieback is now widespread across Sussex. We assess affected trees honestly — not every infected ash needs felling straight away — and where removal is necessary we carry it out safely, including brittle, badly declined trees that need careful dismantling.
Do you cover the villages around East Grinstead?
Yes. We cover the surrounding RH19 area including Felbridge, Ashurst Wood, and out towards Forest Row and West Hoathly. If you are on the Ashdown Forest side, we are happy to quote — access and protected-landscape considerations are things we deal with routinely.
How far is East Grinstead from your base?
About 16 miles — a 30-to-35-minute drive from Hassocks. East Grinstead is in the same district as our home base, so the planning process is familiar and lead times are the same as for the rest of Mid Sussex.
