Tree Surgeon in Crawley

Crawley’s post-war new town was planned with trees everywhere — and seventy years on, many of them have outgrown their gardens. We manage, reduce, and remove them safely across all neighbourhoods.

Tree Surgeons in Crawley

Crawley is unusual among the towns we cover: most of it was laid out from scratch after it was designated a New Town in 1947, and the planners planted generously. Seventy-plus years later, those street and garden trees — oaks, limes, cherries, and a great many fast-growing conifers — have matured all at once. In neighbourhoods like Tilgate, Furnace Green, Southgate, and Pound Hill we regularly deal with trees that now dwarf the houses they were planted beside, blocking light and dropping limbs over fences.

The town’s history did not start in 1947, though. Crawley has eleven designated conservation areas, and the oldest corners are genuinely historic: Ifield Village, first designated in 1981 and extended twice since, wraps around a 13th-century church and village green on the north-west edge of town; the High Street conservation area (1986) protects the medieval hall houses and coaching inns of the old market town; and at Worth (1987), ancient trees protected by TPOs surround the Anglo-Saxon church of St Nicholas. Within any of these areas, the council must be notified six weeks before work on trees over 7.5 cm in diameter.

Crawley Borough Council manages its own TPOs and keeps an online register, and copies of individual orders are available from their protected trees team. We check every Crawley job against the register before quoting. The town is about 14 miles up the A23 from our Hassocks base — a 25-to-30-minute drive — so both scheduled work and urgent callouts are straightforward for us.

Tree Preservation Orders in Crawley

Crawley Borough Council manages Tree Preservation Orders across the borough and maintains an online TPO register. If a tree on your property has a TPO, you must apply for consent before carrying out any work, including pruning or felling. Applications are free and the council has up to 8 weeks to make a decision. For a copy of a specific Order, you can email protectedtrees@crawley.gov.uk with the tree’s address and the TPO reference. For genuinely dead or dangerous protected trees, advance notice with supporting evidence must still be given before emergency work is carried out.

Crawley has 11 designated conservation areas, including Ifield Village (designated 1981 and extended in 1992 and 2013), the High Street (1986), Worth (1987), St Peter’s (1996), and Brighton Road (2009). Within a conservation area, no work can be carried out on a tree with a trunk diameter over 7.5 cm (measured at 1.5 m above ground level) without first notifying the council, which then has six weeks to decide whether to allow the work or place a TPO on the tree.

Removal of a large Oak tree

Antony was polite and responsive from first contact. On site, the job was done efficiently, with skill (the large oak was roadside & there were telephone wires to navigate past) and his team cleaned the site extremely well afterwards. Everything was organised by Antony, including the traffic control on the main road. Very impressed and would definitely use again. Thank you.

Tree and stump removal

Antony Geer of A C Garden & Trees and his team recently removed a very large Lawson Cypress tree plus a row of five Laylandii trees that were on a steep bank at the front of my house including tree stumps. I was most impressed by their efficiency and speed in completing the task and ensuring that the site was left clear of all debris. I have no hesitation in recommending A C Garden & Trees should you ever have the need to use their services. Rod Smith

Bamboo removal

Job was to dig out and remove 2 clump forming bamboos from our back garden. This was carried out proficiently and garden was left extremely tidy. Advice was given on what to do if bamboo comes back, which was much appreciated. Pleasure to deal with and will certainly use again in the future for any tree works.

FAQ

Common Questions in Crawley

Which council handles tree protection in Crawley?

Crawley Borough Council. They maintain an online TPO register, and copies of individual orders can be requested from protectedtrees@crawley.gov.uk. If your property is in one of Crawley’s eleven conservation areas — including Ifield Village, the High Street, Worth, St Peter’s, and Brighton Road — the council needs six weeks’ notice before work on any tree over 7.5 cm in trunk diameter. We handle the checks and paperwork for you.

Do you cover all Crawley neighbourhoods?

Yes — Ifield, Bewbush, Broadfield, Southgate, Tilgate, Furnace Green, Three Bridges, Pound Hill, Maidenbower, Langley Green, and the rest. We cover both RH10 and RH11 postcodes as well as the surrounding villages.

Can you remove large conifers in Crawley gardens?

This is one of our most requested jobs in Crawley. Leyland cypress and other conifers planted for quick screening decades ago often reach 15 metres or more. We dismantle them in sections, safely lower the timber, and can grind out the stumps afterwards so the space is usable again.

How quickly can you get to Crawley?

We are based in Hassocks, about 25 to 30 minutes down the A23. For emergency work such as storm damage we can usually attend the same day; planned work is typically scheduled within one to two weeks.
