Tree Surgeons in Uckfield

Uckfield is an East Sussex market town that grew up where the road south from London crosses the River Uck, on the wooded southern edge of the Weald. Ashdown Forest — the largest area of open heath and woodland in the South East — lies a few miles to the north, and the countryside around the town is a patchwork of shaws, hedgerows, and small woods on heavy Wealden clay. Gardens here tend to be well treed: oak and hornbeam do particularly well on the clay, while self-seeded ash and sycamore are constant arrivals on larger plots.

The town has a substantial conservation area covering its historic core. It was first designated in 1998 and re-designated with amended boundaries by Wealden District Council on 22 March 2017, one of 33 conservation areas the council manages directly. Within it, any tree with a stem diameter over 75 mm is automatically protected, and the council needs six weeks’ written notice — a Section 211 notice — before work can begin. Wealden also has an online map with a TPO layer, and we check it for every Uckfield job before quoting.

Uckfield is the furthest east we regularly travel — about 15 miles and a 35-minute drive from our Hassocks base, out through Ditchling and across the Weald. We are upfront about that: for a single small job it may be worth trying a tree surgeon closer to home, but for substantial work — large removals, full-day reductions, or several trees at once — customers in Uckfield get the same NPTC-qualified, £10m-insured service and honest pricing as our Mid Sussex regulars.

Tree Preservation Orders in Uckfield

Wealden District Council manages Tree Preservation Orders across its part of East Sussex, including Uckfield, Crowborough, and Hailsham. If a tree has a TPO, you must apply for consent before carrying out any work. The council provides an online map with a TPO layer so you can check whether a tree is protected, although the mapped data is indicative only — written confirmation can be requested from the planning department. Copies of individual Orders are available by emailing planning.information@wealden.gov.uk and quoting the TPO number.

There are 41 conservation areas in Wealden district, 33 of which fall under the council’s own planning authority (the remaining 8 are within the South Downs National Park). All trees within a conservation area with a stem diameter over 75 mm, measured at 1.5 m above ground level, are automatically protected. Before working on such a tree you must give the council at least six weeks’ written notice using a Section 211 notice. The Uckfield Conservation Area was first designated in 1998 and re-designated with amended boundaries on 22 March 2017.

Removal of a large Oak tree

Antony was polite and responsive from first contact. On site, the job was done efficiently, with skill (the large oak was roadside & there were telephone wires to navigate past) and his team cleaned the site extremely well afterwards. Everything was organised by Antony, including the traffic control on the main road. Very impressed and would definitely use again. Thank you.

Tree and stump removal

Antony Geer of A C Garden & Trees and his team recently removed a very large Lawson Cypress tree plus a row of five Laylandii trees that were on a steep bank at the front of my house including tree stumps. I was most impressed by their efficiency and speed in completing the task and ensuring that the site was left clear of all debris. I have no hesitation in recommending A C Garden & Trees should you ever have the need to use their services. Rod Smith

Bamboo removal

Job was to dig out and remove 2 clump forming bamboos from our back garden. This was carried out proficiently and garden was left extremely tidy. Advice was given on what to do if bamboo comes back, which was much appreciated. Pleasure to deal with and will certainly use again in the future for any tree works.

FAQ

Common Questions in Uckfield

Which council covers tree work in Uckfield?

Uckfield is in East Sussex and comes under Wealden District Council, not the West Sussex authorities we usually deal with. Wealden manages TPOs and the town’s conservation area, provides an online TPO map, and requires a six-week Section 211 notice for work on conservation-area trees over 75 mm in diameter. We deal with the correct forms and submit them on your behalf.

Is Uckfield town centre in a conservation area?

Yes. The Uckfield Conservation Area was first designated in 1998 and re-designated with amended boundaries in March 2017. It covers the historic core of the town, and trees within it with a stem diameter over 75 mm are automatically protected. We check whether your property falls inside the boundary before we start.

Is Uckfield really within your working area?

Yes, honestly — but it is at the edge of it. We are based in Hassocks, about a 35-minute drive away. We regularly take on Uckfield jobs, and for larger work the travel makes no difference to the price. For very small jobs we will tell you straight if a local firm would be more economical.

Do you work on properties towards Ashdown Forest?

Yes. We cover the countryside around Uckfield including Maresfield, Nutley, and the lanes up towards the Forest edge. Rural plots here often have larger native trees and trickier access, both of which we handle routinely.
