Tree Surgeon in Horsham
A historic market town with a leafy conservation area at its heart and ancient woodland on its doorstep. We provide expert tree surgery across Horsham and the surrounding district.
Tree Surgeons in Horsham
Horsham’s town centre conservation area is one of the finest in West Sussex, and nowhere shows it better than the Causeway — the quiet street of timber-framed, brick, and Horsham slate buildings that leads down to St Mary’s Church and the River Arun. The trees here are part of the townscape, and many carry individual Tree Preservation Orders dating back decades; there are hundreds of TPO records within a couple of kilometres of the town centre. Working on trees in central Horsham almost always starts with a protection check, and we handle that as standard.
To the east of the town, St Leonard’s Forest rises along the ridge towards Crawley — ancient woodland at the western end of the Wealden Forest Ridge, within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and partly designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Properties on the eastern side of Horsham and out towards Colgate and Lower Beeding often back onto this wooded landscape, where oak, sweet chestnut, birch, and Scots pine dominate and boundary trees regularly need crown lifting or reducing to keep light in gardens.
Horsham has grown substantially in recent decades, and the newer estates around the town have their own tree issues — fast-growing conifers planted as instant screening in the 1980s and 90s that now tower over fences, and street-side cherries and rowans reaching the end of their lives. Horsham is about 15 miles from our Hassocks base, a 30-to-35-minute drive, and we already work regularly in the south of the district around Henfield, so Horsham jobs slot naturally into our schedule.
How We Help Horsham Homeowners
In Horsham we most often carry out crown reductions on mature garden trees, conifer removals and reshaping on the post-war estates, and hedge work on established boundaries. Horsham District Council has around 39 conservation areas and an interactive TPO map, and we check every tree against it before quoting.
Crown Reduction
Tree getting too big? We’ll reduce its height and spread without ruining its shape. You get more light, less worry about branches, and a tree that still looks natural.

Learn MoreTree Preservation Orders in Horsham
Horsham District Council manages Tree Preservation Orders across most of the district, including the villages of Henfield and Storrington. For land inside the South Downs National Park (including Steyning), tree works applications have been submitted directly to the South Downs National Park Authority since October 2024. If a tree has a TPO, you must apply for consent before carrying out any work. Applications are free and submitted through the national Planning Portal. The council has up to 8 weeks to decide. For genuinely dead or dangerous trees, a 5-day notice with photographs must be submitted. You can check whether a tree is protected using the council’s ArcGIS-based interactive TPO map.
Horsham district has approximately 39 designated conservation areas, including Henfield, Storrington, and Bramber (with Steyning’s conservation area falling under the South Downs National Park Authority). Henfield Conservation Area covers the historic High Street and surrounding lanes, with an adopted Character Appraisal that guides planning decisions. If your property is within a conservation area, you must give 6 weeks’ written notice before carrying out work on any tree with a trunk diameter over 75 mm at 1.5 m above ground.

Removal of a large Oak tree
Antony was polite and responsive from first contact. On site, the job was done efficiently, with skill (the large oak was roadside & there were telephone wires to navigate past) and his team cleaned the site extremely well afterwards. Everything was organised by Antony, including the traffic control on the main road. Very impressed and would definitely use again. Thank you.
Professional Efficient Garden and Tree experts
Anthony and team were excellent. Very good work carried out by a knowledgeable helpful team. Delighted with results.
Trim trees back
They arrived when they said they would and carried out the work that was requested. Very polite, efficient and tidy. I will use them again in the future.
Tree and stump removal
Antony Geer of A C Garden & Trees and his team recently removed a very large Lawson Cypress tree plus a row of five Laylandii trees that were on a steep bank at the front of my house including tree stumps. I was most impressed by their efficiency and speed in completing the task and ensuring that the site was left clear of all debris. I have no hesitation in recommending A C Garden & Trees should you ever have the need to use their services. Rod Smith
Bamboo removal
Job was to dig out and remove 2 clump forming bamboos from our back garden. This was carried out proficiently and garden was left extremely tidy. Advice was given on what to do if bamboo comes back, which was much appreciated. Pleasure to deal with and will certainly use again in the future for any tree works.
Antony shaped a bay tree and pruned back various trees
Antony is very knowledgable, he listened to what I wanted and advised on the best way of achieving that outcome. Thoroughly lovely person and I was very happy to have him in my garden. Very pleased with the results.

Common Questions in Horsham
Are there protected trees in Horsham town centre?
Yes, many. The town centre conservation area — including the Causeway — contains numerous trees with individual TPOs, some dating back to the 1980s and 90s. Horsham District Council has an interactive TPO map you can check, and within the conservation area you must give the council six weeks’ notice before working on any tree with a trunk over 75 mm in diameter. We check and submit the paperwork for you.
Do you cover the villages around Horsham?
Yes. As well as the town itself we cover the surrounding parts of Horsham district, including Southwater, Colgate, Lower Beeding, and down through Cowfold towards Henfield, where we work every week. If you are unsure whether we reach you, just call.
Can you work on trees bordering St Leonard’s Forest?
Yes. We regularly work on boundary trees where gardens meet woodland. Trees on the forest edge are often large, exposed to wind, and may be protected, so we assess each one before quoting and check for TPOs. We carry £10 million public liability insurance for all work.
How quickly can you get to Horsham?
Horsham is around a 30-to-35-minute drive from our Hassocks base. For emergencies such as storm-damaged or fallen trees we can usually attend the same day; for planned work we typically schedule within one to two weeks.
